CUSTOM FOOTBEDS

What are custom footbeds?

Custom footbeds are removable insoles ergonomically designed and scientifically tested to increase power, endurance and comfort through a precise, custom-level of hip, knee and foot alignment.

How does it work?

First your fitter will assess your feet and properly measure both length and width and the length of the foot arch in both feet. Then he will use the moulding tray to mould the material around the feet. Once done the footbed blank will be heated then placed into the moulded tray to create the custom fit. The whole process will take around 30 minutes.

Read Retül’s explanation of the process here.

How can footbeds benefit cyclists?

A premium riding experience requires a strong connection with your bike, and this starts with your feet. Footbeds are just as important to a cyclist as a bike fit in ensuring the biomechanics of the body are optimised.

Custom footbeds can address all of the following:

  • Flat feet
  • High arches
  • Pain or soreness in the calf, shin or Achilles tendon
  • Knee pain
  • Heel pain
  • Arch pain
  • Hip pain
  • Pain in the ball of the foot
  • Numbness or tingling of the foot or leg

Perfect foot alignment translates to greater pedalling power and support to the lower limbs. Custom footbeds will help you maximise control on the pedal. As a result, the entire leg works more efficiently and body performance is enhanced.

Custom footbeds cost £150. For a limited launch period of 1st October – 31st December 2018, we are offering custom footbeds for £120.

We strongly recommend that customers combine the custom footbed with their choice of Retül bike fit level 1 or level 2. Details on the combined packages with discounted custom footbed fee are below.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

I’ve always struggled with my right leg, throughout Junior racing and then in the Army. I think it was down to an injury when I was very young but as northern 1970’s kid you were just told to walk it off… which actually we now know means that your body just compensates and when you fix yourself to a bike with its totally symmetric action you really struggle..

Struggling is all relative, I’ve done a few races and won a few but it was always on a course where I could stand up a lot with a low cadence, as soon as I sat down and had to pedal at around 90rpm the power totally went out of my legs (1 min pb, stood up 681w.. sat down 511w)

I always looked forward to cyclocross races which involved a lot of running as it was the only time in a bike race I felt I could get going… less than ideal.

I’ve had a few bike fits before and could never get comfortable or smooth on the pedals, I’ve had a whole variety of insoles, spacers, shims and wedges fastened to the bottom of my shoes with zero success.

Getting The Specialized insoles and having a bike fit with Steve has allowed me fix my feet in the correct position and allow me to locate the origin of the problem in my leg and do some successful rehab exercises.

We’ve made changes to my cleat position which has worked wonders (We tried this before but my feet just moved inside the shoe!) and we’ve raised my saddle allowing me to increase the foot dorsi-flexion in the 12 o’clock position allowing me to push down sooner. A higher saddle also allows more leg extension (push) (we tried this before, my foot rolled inwards at the 6 o’clock position and caused pain in my hamstring and Achilles)

3 days after having the insoles made I rode my SRM indoor trainer at 164bpm for 20mins resulting in 4 year best of 351w.

I’ve also found that sitting at 400w is a lot easier, my legs don’t scream at me half as much as they did :0)

I might need to do a 5 min test and see if I can hold 430-450w? (might need to psyche myself up for that one!)

The new insoles are a great addition to the large array of customising that can be done in detail to tailor for the individual.

If comfort sits at the top of your list I would highly recommend this service. The process is simple. Feet measured, then sit and have ones feet vacumed and prints made for the soles to be heated and pressed into. Once cool, cut into shape and hay presto! A pair of shoes that fit like a glove.

Avoid long rides immediately after installation as legs and feet will need to get used to the suttle changes. Pedal efficiency and power out put is increased which makes the marginal gains noticable.

I am pleasantly surprised as to how comfotable the shoes are now, considering I have quite flat arches that are now properly supported!

I would highly recommend this for anyone who’s looking to help themselves become better riders with the assistance of great staff to make the process easy and hassle free.
